Visual Data 07 is the newest version of Visual Data, a program that accompanies Carr’s text, “Data Visualization in the Geosciences. “  This program is regularly revised and maintained for use by students in GE 385, GE 404/604, and GE 743.  There is no fee collected for this program.  Moreover, this program is available free of charge to anyone wishing to try it.  Visual Data 07 offers the following analytical tools:

                 1.  Histogram analysis and plotting; this includes two hypothesis tests for normality.

                 2.  Two-dimensional X-Y graphing

                 3.  Regression analysis:

                                  A.  Classical (traditional); error assumed on Y only

                                  B.   Error is assumed for BOTH X and Y

                                  C.   Least Absolute Deviation; error assumed on Y only

                                  D.  M-regression; error on Y only

                                  E.  Non-linear regression; order is selected by the user

                                  F.  Multiple linear regression

                 4.  Principal components analysis

                 5.  Correspondence Analysis

                 6.  Variogram Analysis

                 7.  Kriging (Spatial Analysis and Interpolation based on the variogram); a new user interface has been designed:

                 8.  Cross-variogram analysis and cokriging (for multivariate spatial analysis)

                 9.  Geostatistical simulation (spatial simulation)

                 10.  Contour line drawing

                 11.  Three-Dimensional Grid Display

                 12.  Time Series Analysis (Slow Fourier transform)

                 13.  Digital Image Analysis that offers the following tools:

                                  A.  Converting raw images to Windows bitmaps

                                  B.  Image Display

                                  C.  Statistical Analysis

                                  D.  Contrast Adjustment

                                  E.  Filtering (spatial convolution):  low pass, high pass, high boost, median, sigma, Gaussian, and custom

                                  F.  Principal Components Transformation (Decorrelation stretch)

                                  G.  Ratios

                                  H.  Differencing and summing

                                  I.  Color compositing (8-bit to 24-bit bitmap conversion); also provides HIS transform

                                  J.  Color separation (24-bit to 8-bit conversion)

New:  image fusion via HIS transform and back transform is available in Visual_Data_07 by using

Color compositing and Color separation tools.

                                  K.  Pixel extraction

                                  L.  Classification:  minimum distance to mean, texture classification, and edge classification

                                  M.  Image resizing

                                  N.  Swapping byte order for 16-bit raw images (sometimes necessary for Windows)

                                  O.  Atmospheric correction (simple bias level correction)

                                  P.  Mosaic assembly

                                  Q.  Two dimensional Fourier transform

                                  R.  Image registration

                                  S.  Image fusion via wavelets

                 14.  Digital Image animation

                 15.  Tools for aiding the understanding of kriging and multivariate data analysis:

                                  A.  Simultaneous equation solution

                                  B.  Eigenvalue and Eigenvector calculation

                                  C.  Matrix multiplication

                                  D.  Matrix Inversion (new to Visual_Data_07)
