INTRODUCTION: THE THEMES IN THE STUDY OF LIFE
OBJECTIVES
After reading this chapter and attending lecture, you should be able
to:

Define the term Biology and list four key points that are necessary for
the understanding of Biology.*

Briefly describe the organization of life (from atoms to biosphere).*

Explain the concept of emergent properties and the reductionist approach
and systems biology approach to studying these properties.*

Describe seven properties associated with life and give unique examples
(order, reproduction, etc...).*

Define Biodiversity

Describe Linnaeus' work in Taxonomy and describe how all living organisms
are classified in relation to each other.*

Use the taxinomical classification system to determine how closely related
two organisms are in relation each other.*

Describe the three-domain system and identify key similarities between
organisms found in the same domain.

Using the four kingdom system found in Eukarya, describe the major characteristics
that make each kingdom unique.*
