Nevada Operation Chemistry
(OpChem 2000)
LEVEL I - Application
Nevada Operation Chemistry is a Hands-on Workshop Designed for Elementary and Middle Level Educators.

This program is funded by a grant from Dwight D. Eisenhower, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and Newmont Gold Company.  Additional funds come from the State Department of Education in Nevada, Washoe County School District, Clark County School District and the Rural Alliance.

Who: This workshop is for you if you are (or going to be) an elementary or middle level teacher and have an interest in learning chemistry concepts in a fun and very hands-on manner.   One example of a learning activity would be studying the states of matter through making ice cream in a baggie. Another example would be creating molecular models using toothpicks and gumdrops. One of the culminating activities is learning the chemistry of cooking while making pancakes!!  The chemistry of gold mining will be explored through a special 2 day field trip to one of Newmont gold Company's mines, outside of Winnemucca,  where we will work in a laboratory on-site and learn the chemistry concepts affiliated with that profession.  Also, a day will be spent at Brew Brother's at the Eldorado where yeast culturing and zymurgy experiments and demonstrations will be explored.

When: This workshop will be offered July 17th through July 29, 2000 on the UNR campus. (A 1 day follow up workshop will also be held in the Fall Semester 2000)  The workshop will begin at 8:00 am where a daily continental breakfast will be served, bring your own lunch, but drinks will be provided.  The daily sessions will conclude by 4:00 pm Monday through Friday.

Housing Options: For those of you traveling a distance to attend this workshop (more than 60-75 miles) a housing stipend will be available either through your own school district or through Op Chem.  Housing will arranged by us through the University Inn which is a comfortable hotel situated just off campus.

Credit Options: This course will be offered for 3 credit hours as CI 683 (Special Projects-Operation Chemistry) for graduate students or as CI 483 (Special Projects Operation Chemistry) for undergraduates.  However, the Call number will be suppressed - you must apply to the workshop as there are only 40 slots available.  Successful applicants will be able to get ½ their tuition refunded as a participant in this program. Note that the tuition remission may be done through cooperating districts or though the Nevada Regional Professional Development Centers.

Teaching Faculty: We have a number of great instructors lined up for this workshop.  Just to name a few: Elisabeth Price, 1st grade teacher and former industrial chemist; George Ochs, presidential award winner and veteran chemistry teacher; David Crowther, UNR science methods instructor; John Cannon, UNR science methods instructor; Michael Robinson, UNR science methods instructor; Dana Sue Kimbal, metallurgist for Newmont Gold Company, and several others.

How do I get to do this: Unfortunately, we can only accommodate 40 people in this workshop.  The registration number will be suppressed - so in order to guarantee a spot - fill out the registration information on the back of this form.  Applications will be accepted on a first come - first serve basis with special emphasis given to special needs,  teams from the same school (2-4 people) and to geographical region.  Please type or print legibly and return no later than April 15, 2000.  Applicants will be notified of their status by May 15, 2000.
