The Graduating Class of NOPS 2000
Nevada Operation Physical Science is a Hands-on
Physics and
Physical Science Workshop Designed for
Elementary and Middle Level Educators (K-8).
This program is funded by a grant from Dwight D. Eisenhower for higher education grant. Additional support comes from the Northwest Regional Professional Development Center, Washoe County School District, and Clark County School District.
Who: This workshop is for you if you are (or going to be) an elementary or middle level teacher and have an interest in learning physics and physical science concepts in a fun and very hands-on manner.
Activities: Topics will include: light, sound, energy, gravity, machines, motion, electricity, magnets, and activities relating to the Mobile Engineering Lab which can be brought to your schools!! One example of a learning activity would be studying the potential and kinetic energy by rolling soup cans, making spool race cars and by bowling!! Another example would be learning angle of incidence by playing marbles and the game of billiards. The majority of the Physical Science standards (not chemistry related) will be covered in this innovative and hands-on inquiry workshop.
When: This workshop will be offered on 3 weekends (totaling 6 days) throughout the Spring and Summer of 2002. Specific dates are Friday May 31 & June 1, July 26 & 27, and August 16 & 17 on the UNR campus. The workshop will begin at 12:00 noon on each Friday (Your district or PDC will supply substitute costs) and continue to about 7 or 8 that evening. We will begin again on Saturday morning at 8:00 am. and finish up at 4:00 pm. We will supply a continental breakfast, but bring your own lunch.
Housing & Travel Options: For those of you traveling a distance to attend this workshop (more than 60-75 miles) a housing stipend will be available. Housing will be arranged by us through the University Inn which is a comfortable hotel situated just off campus. Travel accomodations (by way of flights) will be made for Las Vegas participants. A travel mileage stipend will be provided for people traveling in their own vehicles. (More specifics with this will follow upon acceptance).
Credit Options: This course will be offered for 3 credit
hours as CI 683 (Special Projects-Operation Physical Science) for graduate
students or as CI 483 (Special Projects - Operation Physical Science) for
undergraduates. However, the Call
number will be suppressed - you must apply to the workshop as there
are only 40 slots available. Professional Development Centers may
pay partial tuition. Scholarships will be available to most applicants
for ½ their tuition on individual needs basis.
Teaching Faculty: We have some great instructors lined
up for this workshop. Dr. John Cannon and Dr. Dave Crowther will
be the primary instructors for the labs. Other instructors will include
Dr. Dave Bennum from the Physics department and
Denise Lane from the Engineering Mobile Lab (engineering Dept. at UNR).
How do I get to do this: Unfortunately, we can only accommodate
40 people in this workshop. The registration number will be suppressed
- so in order to guarantee a spot - fill out the registration information
on the back of this form. Applications will be accepted on a first
come - first serve basis with special emphasis given to special needs,
teams from the same school (2-4 people) and to geographical region.
Please type or print legibly and return no later than MAY
1, 2002. Applicants
will be notified of their status by May 5, 2002 or sooner if possible.
