Course Announcement Fall 2007

Math 701 Numerical Analysis
Instructor: Jeff Mortensen
MW  4:00 - 05:15 PM jm@unr.edu
Location: ABB 638
Prerequisites: Contact Instructor

Prerequisites: Familiarity with a programming language is advised. Previous instruction in Numerical Analysis is not assumed. Please contact the instructor for further information.

Math701 is the first course in a year long sequence dedicated to studying Numerical Analysis at the graduate level. In this sequence we consider a variety of techniques that solve various problems appearing in applications. We plan to analyze the various methods for the solution of the three main classes of problems that represent the subject of numerical analysis:

Linear Systems

Approximation

Dierential Equations

The grade in the course will be based on in class examination, homework assignments/projects and presentations.
The assignments will include both theoretical and computational problems.
The main computing languages will be MATLAB and Maple.
