We will begin the course with a review of Chapter 7 and continue with Chapters 8, 9, 10 and 12.
HW 1: Show without using quotient rings that a maximal ideal is prime; give an example of a ring and a prime ideal which is not maximal; page 259, no. 37.
HW 2: In class: Show that Z[(1+ \sqrt{-19})/2] is a PID, but not a Euclidean domain; pages 282-3, exercises 3 and 8.
