GIS DATA VIEWERS
Free or inexpensive GIS data viewers that can be used to view and query the various GIS data sets that are available on the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) Web site. Listed below, with links to download sites, are three free GIS applications that can be used to view and query these data sets. At the bottom of this document is a list of some Statewide Nevada GIS data sets with Web links to zip files that contain the GIS data. These data sets are available free of charge.
MapWindow GIS desktop application is a free, open source, standards-based standalone software package that you can use to view and edit GIS data in many file formats.
The software includes plug-ins for various geoprocessing tasks (e.g. buffer, merge, etc.), watershed delineation, accessing online data sources, and an experimental geodatabase plug-in. The attribute table editor can be used to write simple queries, and there is a complete scripting editor that allows you to write and run scripts in VB.NET and C# directly in the MapWindow program.
Download MapWindow GIS if you need a simple map viewer, or if you want to write your own custom plug-ins to distribute to other users.
MapWindow is an extensible geographic information system. This means that you can write plug-ins to add additional functionality (models, special viewers, hot-link handlers, data editors, etc.) and pass these along to any number of your clients and end users. MapWindow includes standard GIS data visualization features as well as DBF attribute table editing, shapefile editing, and grid importing and conversion. MapWinGIS ActiveX includes a GIS API for shapefile and grid data with many built in GIS functions.
ArcExplorer is a lightweight GIS data viewer developed by ESRI. This freely available software offers an easy way to perform a variety of basic GIS functions, including display, query, and data retrieval applications. It can be used on its own with local data sets or as a client to Internet data and map servers.
With ArcExplorer you can:QGIS allows you to create, edit, model, and export spatial data using a variety of analysis and editing tools.
