Richard L. Siegel: Consultant

In addition to his diverse roles in university settings Richard L. Siegel has decades of experience outside academia as founder, board member and board chairperson of a host of nonprofit organizations. He has shaped highly innovative and entrepreneurial approaches to organizational development while also contributing substantially to programmatic efforts. His current primary organizational involvements are with the American Civil Liberties Union, Education Alliance, and the Nevada Committee on Foreign Relations. He had a leading role in the creation and development of the Northern Nevada International Center, the Nevada Committee on Foreign Relations, the Nevada Coalition against the Death Penalty, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada. Additionally, he helped the national ACLU develop its programs in international human rights and public education. He is regularly asked to assist nonprofit organizations and to consult with them on organizational and policy matters.

Siegel has also consulted on efforts by governmental agencies and such intergovernmental bodies as the World Health Organization and the United Nations to develop policy positions on major issues related to human rights. His policy consultation work at the state level has involved projects concerning human rights and mental health, criminal justice, elections and public education. He has taught relevant graduate seminars in public policy processes and policy alternatives at the University of Nevada, Reno.

In several cases his consultation has been part of projects in which experts come together for brainstorming and the development of collaborative publications. This has involved the writing of chapters as well as contributions to the conception of the resulting publications. This was the case for his papers and chapters prepared for the United Nations Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the United Nations University, and the Science and Human Rights Project of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Siegel is particularly interested in consulting with for-profit and nonprofit firms and organizations to assist them with governmental relations, policy and organizational development. He seeks to continue to utilize his considerable experience and his contacts in the State of Nevada and, in the human rights field, nationally and internationally.
