Guidelines for Authors
Revised June, 2002

Counselor Education and Supervision is dedicated to publishing manuscripts concerned with research, theory development, or program applications related to counselor education and supervision. The journal is concerned with the preparation and supervision of counselors in agency or school settings, in colleges and universities, or at local, state, or federal levels.

The journal uses an anonymous review procedure, so please prepare all manuscripts for blind review. There are two methods of submission.  You can submit via email attachment to ces@unr.nevada.edu, or by disk as indicated below.  References to specific institutions or states within the manuscript should be masked until your manuscript has been accepted for publication and you submit the final version. Final decisions regarding publication are made by the Editor. Generally, authors can expect a decision regarding a manuscript within 2 months of the acknowledgment of receipt.

Following are guidelines for developing and submitting a manuscript. Manuscripts that do not conform to these guidelines will be returned to the author without review.

Manuscript Categories

Submitted manuscripts must be accompanied by a cover letter designating the format of the manuscript (qualitative design, quantitative design, or position paper). The cover letter should include the email addresses of all authors. In addition, the cover letter must include the category under which the manuscript should be published. Categories are as follows:

1. Counselor Preparation. Research and theory articles on counseling curriculum and training.

2. Supervision. Research and theory articles on counseling supervision.

3. Professional Development. Research and descriptive articles related to ongoing professional development for counselors by counselor educators and supervisors.

4. Current Issues. Research and descriptive articles on counselor education and supervision on accreditation, licensure, counselor function, and other timely topics.

5. Special Sections. A set of articles on a specific theme that appears periodically. A special section is proposed by an organizer for approval by the editorial board process and if approved, coordinated by the organizer using the regular board review process.

6. Innovative Methods. Clearly delineated and substantiated descriptions of new methods, ideas, and innovations in counselor education and supervision. Manuscripts must include a review of the literature establishing a basis for the methods, a description of the methods including the context in which the methods are used, and a qualitative or quantitative evaluation.

7. Book and Media Reviews. Critical reviews of recent books and other media used by counselor educators and supervisors. Reviews should include the complete book or media title and edition, authors, publisher, place and date of publication, number of pages (if appropriate), price and ISBN number. Reviews should not exceed 1,500 words. Submit disk, cover letter, and 2 paper copies to the Editor, as outlined below.

8. Comments. A section of carefully composed brief comments on articles recently appearing in the journal.

Manuscript Requirements

1. Manuscripts are not to exceed 20 pages total, including all references, tables, etc. Manuscripts should include a 50-100 word abstract. All manuscripts are to be double-spaced including references and extensive quotes. Allow 1" margins on all sides.

2.  Manuscript files should be submitted in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect for Windows.  We do not accept MacIntosh formats.  For re-submissions only, please combine the cover letter and manuscript into one complete file which is prepared for blind review. Files must be submitted in a 12-point Times Roman Font. The author's name and the software in which the manuscript was written must be clearly labeled on the disk.

3. Use the Publication Manual for the American Psychological Association (5th edition) as a manual for style and manuscript format, including style for all figures, tables, and references. Figures that are not camera-ready will be returned to the author and may cause a delay in publication. Authors bear responsibility for the accuracy of references tables and figures.

4. Authors are encouraged to use guidelines to reduce bias in language against persons on the basis of gender, sexual orientation, racial or ethnic group, disability, or age by referring to the fifth edition of the Publication Manual for the American Psychological Association.

5. Do not submit material that has been previously published or that is under consideration with another periodical.

6. Lengthy quotations (300-500 words) require written permission from the copyright holder for reproduction. Adaptation of tables and figures also requires reproduction approval. It is the author's responsibility to secure such permission. A copy of the publisher's permission must be provided to the journal Editor immediately on acceptance of the article for publication.

7. OPTION ONE (Preferred Method):  If submitting by email attachment, please include your cover letter in the body of the email, and make sure the computer file is prepared for blind review.  Send your manuscript to ces@unr.nevada.edu.  All tables and figures must be included and properly formatted within the electronic file (e.g., they will not be accepted separately).  OPTION TWO:  If submitting by IBM formatted hard disk, please submit two (2) hard copies of the entire manuscript, of which one (1) copy is prepared for blind review, along with the disk, to Marlowe H. Smaby, Editor, Counselor Education and Supervision, Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology/281, University of Nevada, Reno, NV 89557-0213. Regardless of submission method, please include the email addresses of all authors in the manuscript cover letter.
