The Department of Mathematics and Statistics offers courses leading to the degrees of bachelor of science or bachelor of arts with a major in mathematics, master of science with a major in mathematics and master of arts for the teaching of mathematics.

The bachelors degrees have options for applied mathematics, discrete mathematics/operations research, statistics, or general mathematics study.

The bachelor of arts degree provides a traditional liberal arts experience through a balanced course of study in the arts, humanities, foreign language, social and natural sciences.

The bachelor of science degree is an "expanded major," which provides a more intense experience in mathematics, computing and science.

Students planning to major in mathematics are encouraged to consult an advisor from the Mathematics and Statistics Department to design a program of study in mathematics or statistics.

Research
I graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in May 2008 with a B.S. in Mathematics and a minor in Economics. I am currently pursuing my Master's degree in Mathematics with my end goal being a Ph.D.

My focal area for research for my Master's thesis is in knot theory and algebraic applications to the classification of certain types of knots. In particular, I am researching the Rational Witt Classes of knots. Currently I am using techniques in bilinear algebra/quadratic forms and group theory (this is closely related to the algebraic concordance of knots). I also have great interests in the pure mathematical forms of algebraic topology, knot theory, and abstract algebra.

Interests
I have two main hobbies in my life: music and basketball.

I play the saxophone, flute, clarinet, and a little bit of piano. I played in the jazz department here at UNR for 4 years and specialized in music composition during my musical studies.

I am a college/NBA basketball fan and a HUGE Nevada basketball supporter. I generally do not miss home games and I travel to tournaments when feasible.
