Lab notebook
- use only non-eraseable pens
- each page needs to be dated and numbered
- every single experiment and piece of data is entered into the notebook
- do not glue TLC plates to notebook, draw the TLC plate with the results
- title each experiment, draw reaction scheme, indicate molecular weights of reagents and amounts utilized
- describe experiment
- if experiment follows literature prep, indicate reference
- describe observations and data collected (NMR, IR, UV-vis, etc)
- record yield (mass and percentage)
NMR spectra
- name spectrum - initials; notebook page; notebook number; eventually sample number in page; e.g. ABB1P25_1
- manual shimming and phase correction
- baseline correction
- whenever possible, calibrate spectrum on TMS peak
- print copy between 10 and 0 ppm
- print copy of the amplified area or areas of interest
- always annotate/interpret spectrum
NMR spectrometers
ChemDraw
- use ACS settings
- in word documents decrease drawing size to 75%
Powerpoint template
X-ray structures
- crystal size
- crystal color
- crystal shape
- enter crystal information, data set name (ABDxxx), unit cell data, molecular formula and drawing of molecule into group's logbook
Diamond
- use page layout for bmp file and page size 20 cm x 22 cm
- save multiple pictures of structure in the same .diamdoc file
- save each picture as .jpg
