Lab safety goggles are now required in every research lab. for safety purposes. The Chemistry Department used to allow safety glasses or simply eyeglasses fitted with side shields, but these do not provide adequate protection against chemical splashing or other unforeseen and potentially harmful hazards.
Lab goggles offer a higher degree of lab safety because they offer the most substantial protection to your eyes, by completely enclosing the upper part of your face. Ventilation is provided indirectly by small plastic vents, and the lens is typically designed to be large enough not to interfere with peripheral vision.
Note: The lens on most lab safety goggles is made of a polymer which is easily dissolved by acetone. Do not attempt to clean your goggles using wash acetone. A mild solution of soapy water applied with a soft cloth will do the trick, and won't destroy your goggles.
