Support rings, like utility clamps, are used to secure some types of glassware to a support stand, and are sometimes called "iron rings". Support rings are most often used to hold a separatory funnel or a filter funnel in place.

Also similar to utility clamps, support rings can be extension-type, in which case the distance from the support stand can be varied using a clamp holder, or they can have the clamp holder feature integrated into their design (as pictured above left). In the latter case, the tightening screw may become stripped or stuck, in which case you may exchange it for a newer one at the stockroom.
