Graduated cylinders are tall glass cylinders used for measuring volumes of liquids. Each cylinder consists of the glass cylinder and a separable plastic base, and the large sizes (that is, larger than 10-mL) are fitted with plastic guard rings which help to prevent breakage if the cylinder is accidentally tipped over. For this reason, it helps to keep the movable guard ring near the top of the cylinder.
