The thermometers are mercury-filled.
. Note: mercury thermometers are sometimes susceptible to "bubbles" in the mercury column, due to sudden jarring or a hairline fracture. In either case, exchange the thermometer for a new one, since even if there is no crack in the thermometer, a bubble will throw off any temperature measurements.
Also note: broken thermometers result in mercury spills, which are toxic!
