Volumetric flasks are glass containers calibrated to contain an exact amount of liquid, and are used in chemical applications when precision and accuracy are important. Such applications usually involve preparing a solution of exact molarity or normality.
Such applications rarely come up in the organic chemistry labs, simply because the precision of graduated cylinders are sufficient for nearly all of the experiments performed. In special instances you may require greater accuracy, in which case several sizes of volumetric flasks (ranging from 10-mL to 250-mL) are available for check-out from the stockroom.
