Lab Glassware and Equipment
test paper
Test paper includes litmus paper and pH paper, the two types of test paper used in the organic chemistry labs.
Litmus paper
Litmus paper comes in two colors, red and blue. Blue litmus paper turns red upon addition of acid, and red litmus paper turns blue upon addition of base. If you can remember that "B" stands for both "blue" and "base", you can keep things straight!
pH paper
pH paper is used to generate a more accurate measure of the pH of a liquid than litmus paper. The pH of an aqueous solution can be determined by wetting a strip of pH paper with the solution and then comparing the resulting color to the little chart on the side of the pH paper dispenser.
