Distillation & Reaction Glassware

bent adapter

bent adapter

The bent adapter is used in a distillation set-up. The sole function of this piece of glassware is to connect to the West condenser and to direct the distilled liquid into the receiving flask.

Another piece of glassware sometimes used for this purpose is a vacuum adapter, which resembles the bent adapter above in form but features a standard taper joint on the bottom, which is fitted with a round bottom flask as the receiving flask. A vacuum adapter also has a short side-arm to which a vacuum line may be applied. Since the entire system is thus closed, a reduced-pressure distillation may be accomplished. However, since reduced-ressure distillations are not commonly done in the instructional labs, vacuum adapters are not stocked in the equipment drawers. They are available from the stockroom if needed.

You should have 1 bent adapter in your equipment drawer.
