There are two types of filter funnels: stemmed and stemless.

Stemmed funnel:

This type of glass funnel is designed for gravity filtration, and will accomodate the largest size of filter paper found in the lab. Stemmed funnels are also commonly used for transferring of liquids into a container with a small neck.

Stemless funnel:

This glass funnel is specifically for "hot filtrations"; that is, gravity-filtering of a hot solution in a recrystallization process. The "no-stem" feature prevents the filtrate from cooling and the compound forming crystals prematurely (e.g., in the stem).

For Chem 345/347/348 you should have 1 stemmed and 1 stemless funnel in your equipment drawer. For Chem 220L, you should only have the stemmed funnel.

Note: if you break the stem off of a stemmed funnel, please do not use it as a stemless funnel! Stemless funnels have a smooth opening and are not jagged. Please exchange broken funnels for whole ones at the stockroom.
