Hiking in Northern Nevada
There are many options for hiking around Reno and
throughout Nevada. Please visit summitpost.org
for more info on the regions hiking opportunities. Here are some of our
favorites:
 |
Mount Rose
The trail winds through beautiful forests and
meadows before climbing to the summit. Moderate difficulty, ~5.5
mi to the summit (11 mi round-trip).
Trailhead begins at the summit of Mt. Rose Hwy,
south of Reno heading toward Lake Tahoe. |
 |
Steamboat Ditch and Hunter Creek
Steamboat Ditch is a popular biking/jogging
trail. Hunter Creek trail splits off the ditch trail and climbs
into the north end of the Mt. Rose wilderness. Moderate difficulty.
From West McCarran, head west on Mayberry. Turn
left onto Plateau Rd. Turn right at Crest of hill and park on
the right. |
 |
Incandescent Rock
The
Incandescent Rock Preservation Area is located about 22 miles
north of Reno off of Highway 445. Turn left onto Grass Valley
Road. This is a gravel road with some washboarding. Just before
you get to the Flying Club gate turn right and go for another
mile. Then, look for a dirt track on the right and follow that.
Go a short distance and turn left. Less than a mile down the road
is a gate off to the right. This is the entrance to Incandescent
Rock.
The area offers a hiking trail through some
spectacular scenery. It's a short hike, about 2 or 3 miles, ending
at a desert waterfall. Depending upon the time of the year the
water may be falling or it may show just as a stain on the face
of the rock. |
 |
Truckee River via Quilici Ranch Road
Easy road that follows the Truckee river for
3 miles. Difficult road splits off main road about 1/2 mile from
trailhead. This road heads up the mountain about 2 miles to a
boy scout camp. The road then continues up to the top of Mt. Rose.
The road is steep and rocky.
From Reno head west on I-80 to Verdi, take exit
3. Turn left at stop sign, turn left after crossing the railroad
tracks onto Quilici Ranch Road. Park at the end of the road. |
