E-RESILIENCY Lab


Mission

The mission of the E-RESILIENCY (Energy Reliability, Security, Stability, Resilience & Efficiency) Research Laboratory is to enhance power grid reliability, security (cyber and physical), stability, resilience, and efficiency and equip future generation of engineers with necessary tools and skill sets to work on emerging technologies.

This lab includes facilities to conduct research focusing on development of efficient algorithms and methods in the areas of power system resilience and reliability, integration of renewable energy sources, and real-time contingency screening and remedial actions.

EE 445/645 Power System Operation and Control with Renewable Energy Sources
This course describes how large-scale interconnected power systems and energy markets are structured and governed in the U.S. It introduces the fundamentals of power system operation, and compares the deregulated power system environment with the previous custom of regulated environments. The students are introduced to various energy types for electrical power production and their use in the power system operation. The advantages and disadvantages of different energy sources are summarized and wind, solar, geothermal based power generation are emphasized. The impacts of these unconventional plants on power system operation and energy markets are introduced by analyzing the benefits as well as the challenges in power system operation concurrently. Main functions of an Energy Management System (EMS) are introduced such as economic dispatch, contingency analysis, security constrained unit commitment and security constrained optimal power flow.

Biography

Dr. Ben-Idris is assistant professor of electrical and biomedical engineering. Prior to joining the University in July 2016, he worked as a research associate and visiting lecturer at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Michigan State University (MSU), East Lansing. At MSU he held a position of associate director of the Energy Reliability & Security (ERISE) Laboratory. Prior to joining Michigan State University, he was assistant lecturer at the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Benghazi, Benghazi, Libya.
He received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Michigan State University, East Lansing and MSc. and BSc. degrees in electrical engineering from University of Benghazi, Benghazi, Libya. He has five years of industry and consulting experience ranging from power plants control and operation to hardware design and installation to modeling and simulation of various aspects of power systems, and total of more than eight years of academic experience. He has conducted research in power system modeling, analysis, reliability, stability, control, planning and simulation. He has over 50 publications in the power systems area, including book chapters, technical articles and research reports and a U.S. patent.

  • Good writing and communication skills and excellent academic records,
  • Good mathematical, analytical, and modeling skills,
  • Strong background in optimization and power system modeling and analysis,
  • Knowledge of programming in C/C++, Fortran, and MATLAB.
